Old things have always fascinated me - I love browsing through auctions and antique shops, and I love to think that something created for a specific purpose a hundred years ago is still serving that same purpose today.
Many people think that antique furniture is only for those who have period houses, and it’s true that some pieces best suit an older house with larger proportions, but there are so many antique and vintage pieces that will fit perfectly into any home and blend well with any style of décor. These are the kind of pieces I like to find – something that you can appreciate the history behind but yet won’t look out of place in a modern house.
I treat each piece individually – in some cases I may decide to French polish an item and restore it to its original beauty, but sometimes I like to re-vamp a piece and give it a fresh new look whilst still respecting its original character. I use a special paint which has been designed for use on wooden furniture and finish by waxing over the paint to increase durability and also give a unique texture which enhances the character of the piece.
Most of what you see here has been lovingly restored or given a fresh new identity and are one-of-a-kind items.
For painted items I have used eco-friendly paints with very low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and finished with natural waxes such as Beeswax. For items that have been French Polished, I use traditional shellac. Personally, I prefer not to use furniture polish sprays on either painted or polished furniture as these can leave a chemical residue that builds up over time – all you need to do is wipe over with a dry cloth.
Outlined below are some examples of what I like to do with old furniture - if you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to contact me - thecraftycailin@gmail.com
